1. Less Routine Maintenance Than Natural Grass
Natural grass typically requires regular:
- Mowing
- Irrigation
- Fertilization
- Weed control
- Seasonal maintenance
Non-infill artificial turf eliminates most of these routine tasks.
This can make it attractive for homeowners who want a consistent lawn appearance without spending substantial time maintaining natural grass.
It can also be useful for gardens used by children and pets, provided that the selected product and complete installation are appropriate for the intended use.
2. No Loose Infill to Manage
Traditional infilled artificial turf may use materials such as silica sand or rubber granules to support the fibers and provide cushioning.
A non-infill system is designed to achieve its required surface characteristics through the turf’s fiber construction, density, backing and, where applicable, integrated cushioning components, rather than relying on loose granular infill.
This can simplify routine garden maintenance because there is no loose infill to redistribute or replenish.
3. Drainage Still Matters
One common misconception is that artificial turf automatically eliminates drainage problems.
It does not.
If the underlying soil is compacted or the drainage system is poorly designed, water can remain beneath the turf even when the turf itself is highly permeable.
A garden installation should therefore consider:
Subgrade → drainage layer/base → slope → turf permeability → surrounding drainage system
The turf should be treated as one part of the complete drainage system.
